The Nursing Innovation Grant Program (NIGP) is a prestigious initiative established by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) to address the critical nursing workforce shortage across the state of Texas. Since its inception, NIGP has provided targeted funding to support innovative projects that enhance the capacity, quality, and effectiveness of nursing education.
Texas, like much of the nation, faces a growing shortage of nurses. One of the biggest challenges isn’t just recruiting students—but having enough qualified faculty and clinical placement sites to train them. Nursing schools across the state often turn away capable students simply because there aren’t enough instructors or real-world learning opportunities available.
The NIGP was designed to tackle this problem head-on by funding new and creative approaches that:
By investing in forward-thinking ideas, the NIGP helps ensure that more nursing students can enter and complete their education—without being held back by system limitations. This not only helps fill jobs in hospitals, clinics, and community health settings but also improves the overall quality and availability of care across Texas.
As a three-time recipient of NIGP funding, SNAPPI is proud to lead in a broader movement to modernize nursing education, one innovative solution at a time.
Each year or funding cycle, the THECB invites colleges, universities, and healthcare collaborators to submit proposals for projects that meet the program’s goals. These proposals are reviewed by experts, and the most promising ones receive financial support to:
Grants may support a wide range of initiatives—from simulation training and online learning platforms to faculty development and, in SNAPPI’s case, integrated academic-practice models.
